The success of Oromo Cultural Exhibitions and Presentation on Africa Day 2012 in Dublin

The success of Oromo Cultural Exhibitions and Presentation on Africa Day 2012 in Dublin

Association of Oromo Community in Ireland (AOCI) was established in 2006 as a non-profiting organization and registered in the Republic of Ireland. The general objective of the organization is to promote integration and encourage the Oromo residing in Ireland as well as new comers to be self supporting and integrating with the native community. Beyond providing numerous services, the AOCI has been active in advocating as well as educating the surrounding communities about the Oromo people, culture and traditions, as well as the Oromo quest for national self determination.

On 26 and 27 May 2012, Association of Oromo Community in Ireland, AOCI, by representing its country Oromia, participated in Africa Day 2012 Celebration in Dublin/Ireland for the first time. Making “Oromo Awareness” one of its objectives, the organization ran Oromo Cultural Exhibitions at two different places in Dublin for more than a month. The exhibitions took place from 12 May until 15 June 2012, two weeks before and two weeks after the Africa Day 2012 Celebration and attracted a large number of visitors

The aim of the exhibition as well as the presentation on Africa Day was not only to display our cultural items but also to show and tell the public about Oromo history, language and culture. Using this opportunity, our aim was also to tell the Irish public about political situation of Oromo people and their struggle for national self determination. The outcomes of both events, Cultural Exhibition and presentation on Africa Day, are very encouraging and we were able to win many friends and supporters for our cause of which we are very proud. Many visitors from both of the exhibitions as well as Africa Day Celebration promised to be the friends of Oromo people and to support our cause. They left their contact details to be in touch with us. After the Africa Day, some even talked to the leaders of AOCI and show their great interest to work and co-operate with our organization in the future.

Regarding Africa Day 2012 Celebration, we published an article with the title “Africa Day event in Ireland has made it clear for many that Ethiopia is not Oromia, and Oromia is not Ethiopia” (see the "BLOG" page). The article attracted lots of readers across the world and as a result many encouraging comments were sent to both the publishing websites http://ayyaantuu.com/horn-of-africa-news/oromia/africa-day-celebration-event-in-ireland-made-it-clear-for-many-that-ethiopia-is-not-oromia-and-oromia-is-not-ethiopia/#more-7051 and http://www.gadaa.com/oduu/13913/2012/05/30/ethiopia-is-not-oromia-oromia-is-not-ethiopia-african-day-in-ireland/ and our website. Our friends were happy to read as facts being exposed, while the other categories were sad. Even though the content of the article shows the fact what happened on those two days, we could see few negative reactions from some individuals just because of the title of the article. As a result they tried to connect our organization with politics. Some even labelled us as narrow nationalists or/and secessionist. The purpose of this short article is to make clear any confusion which was made by such individuals intentionally or unintentionally.

As far as connection to the politics concerned, whether someone likes it or not, any Oromo affair is a political affair. Although our organization, the AOCI, is not a political organization, we cannot and should not be free from politics. It is our national obligation and responsibility to be a voice for our voiceless people back home who are under slavery; who are under subjugation and oppression of successive Ethiopian regimes. That is why we have been telling the Irish as well as the ethnic minority communities about the Oromo quest for national self determination through our active advocacy.

Here we would like to mention some facts why we Oromo cannot and should not be free from politics.

· The Oromo were colonized during the last quarter of the nineteenth century by a black African nation - Abyssinia - with the help of the European colonial powers of the day; and our people are still under colonization by successive regimes of the Ethiopian empire.

· Systematic discrimination, persecution, large scale arbitrary detentions, disappearance, torture, and extrajudicial killings are the highest in Oromia.

These have been documented by many Human Rights organizations. The European Parliament has passed a series of resolutions criticizing the Ethiopian government for its human rights abuse. The US State Department Report on human rights in Ethiopia, dated 8 April 2011 and covering 2010, is for instance more critical than any of the previous ten or more annual reports.

· Oromia region is the highest place where land grabbing is taking place and as a result our people have been displaced from their properties without any compensation

· An estimate of more than 20,000 Oromo are currently in the prisons in Oromia and this fact has been confirmed by a former government Official by saying “…the prison in Ethiopia speaks Oromo language…” in his interview.

These are few of the facts we can mention that Oromo issue is a political issue which should seriously be taken into consideration. Speaking for these facts cannot make someone a narrow nationalist. Making awareness about this reality cannot make someone a secessionist. It is the natural and national right of our people to decide their fate. We are not against any individual, people, nationalities and nations but against the system of domination by the minority regimes. Of course we are against any oppressor and oppressive regime and we will continue to stand against such actions of groups.

Africa Day 2012 Celebration

Posted by oromocommunityireland@gmail.com on June 22, 2012 at 6:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Africa Day celebration event in Ireland made it clear for many that Ethiopia is not Oromia and Oromia is not Ethiopia.

The African Day was celebrated colourfully on 26 and 27 of May 2012 in Dublin, Ireland. Many African embassies and communities across the country came together in open space to show of their culture, identity and the best of their community, their country and their continents at large. Association of Oromo Community in Ireland was not only one of these communities on the event but also the shining star of Africa and its people. Starting from the first day of the event, the community’s members and leaders were there at the event and were very busy in explaining, demonstrating and participating on different competition on the event. The Oromo community’s pavilion was just beside that of the Ethiopian Embassy. Oromo community displayed beautiful Oromo artefacts including cultural costumes. Most of the Oromo gents and ladies, including leaders, were in their attractive costumes. The visitors have to wait for turns to see our artefacts, to try them and to take pictures wearing the Oromo customs, jewelleries, and ornaments.

The Oromo community pavilion was full of Oromo culture. We had live Oromo coffee ceremony during the event where many enjoyed the fresh aroma and taste of Oromo coffee. We had the pictorial display of the world famous runners from Oromia such as Abebe Bikila (Ababa Biqilaa), Derartu Tullu (Daraartuu Tulluu) and Kenenisa Bekele (Qananiisaa Baqqalaa), whom many recognised them but did not know that they are Oromo children.

The members of the Oromo community used this big opportunity to tell every visitor that Oromo people are subjugated people under the tyranny of successive Abyssinian regimes for more than a century. Since most of them, even our African brothers do not know that we Oromos are under colonial rule, we explained that why Ethiopia is said to be a country that has never been colonised. We used the analogy of why British has never been colonised because it was a coloniser. By doing this we the Community members sent many to read more about Oromo. Many visitors promised to continue to be the friends of Oromo and left their contacts to be in touch with our community.

Our community and our people became the focus of discussions even after our beautifully dressed lady aaddee Ayyaantuu Bantii won the awards of “The Best Dressed female” on Africa Day 2012 competition of the event. To everyone’s surprise Aaddee Ayyaantuu, aaddee Seenaa and aaddee Makkiyaa; all three from Oromo community were the top three best dressed Ladies. All of them were in our well decorated and beautiful Oromo customs. Then came the questions like: who are Oromos? Where are they from, etc?

We the Oromo community members used the opportunity to tell Kenyans, Sudanese, Ugandans, Somalis, South Africans etc communities, nationals and diplomats to support and understand Oromo refugees in their country. We explained that Oromos left and will leave their country to run away from colonial persecutions and they never migrate for economic reason as Oromia is naturally a rich country.

While this trend continued into the second day of the event keeping the Oromo members overwhelming busy, no one has visited the pavilion of Wayane which is just metres away from Oromo’s pavilion. To our surprise their pavilion was mostly without supervision and only occasionally an Irish lady comes into and goes out of it, no any other members of the Wayane Embassy in Ireland came except at the beginning and end of the show.

The first day we observed that there was one Oromo item in their show but the next day there was no any items that shows Oromo in there exhibition. We exhibited that we are not Ethiopian and the Ethiopian Embassy exhibited that Oromo is not Ethiopia too. Actually their pavilion has nothing to do with other Ethiopians at all. There were some pictures from the north part of the country, and a picture of Ethiopian Airlines. An Irish who occasionally goes in and out of the pavilion was in Tigre costume. We told the Irish lady who claimed that she is the former Irish Ambassador to Ethiopia, that Oromo is a great nation who is suffering in Ethiopian aristocracy whom her government is deaf ear to their cause for many years. She sympathised with us saying that if real democracy exists in Ethiopia, things would have been better. The lady informed us though that the Ethiopian Embassy was busy in politics of Somalia where she said “the Ethiopian diplomats are in meeting with Somali community”.

The African Day was a great success for Oromo Community in Ireland where the Community clearly and precisely provided information for many African and European nationals and diplomats that Oromo is a great peace loving nation which is denied of freedom of any sort and being subject to incessant aristocratic rule and slavery.

The Oromo awareness has just started two weeks before Africa Day by running Oromo cultural exhibition in Fingal County Council public library in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15. The exhibition continues until 15 June 2012 in Dublin City Council public library in the ILAC shopping centre which will start on Friday 1st of June 2012. The exhibition so far attracted a large number of visitors.

Training and Workshop for AOCI members

Posted by oromocommunityireland@gmail.com on March 29, 2012 at 10:25 AM Comments comments (1)

On 24th of March 2012, AOCI held one day training and workshop for its members. This training and workshop was the first of its kind since the establishment of the organization and covered many different themes about organizational development. Among other things, the day was structured around the four dimensions of an organisation.

• Vision/Value/Mission

• Networks/Relationships

• Organisation/Structure

• Projects/Activities

Furthermore, after thorough discussions about the stages of organizational growth, the participants acknowledged where the organization (AOCI) has come from (the past), explored where the organization currently is, and developed a focus (the future).

The trainer, Mr. Frank Naughton from Partners (Training for Transformation), who has worked with many groups and organisations, brought a range of experience and knowledge that are very useful to the members of AOCI.

Finally, we would like to thank The Community Foundation for Ireland who kindly supported the training and workshop through donations.
